Being Your Own Boss

Most people dream of one day being self employed and there has never been a better time than now to make it happen! The huge resources available on the Internet make it easier than ever to build your Multigent home-based business. Recent tax changes provide the opportunity to build your own company while still maintaining all the benefits you would demand from a corporate job.

Independence, responsibility, the freedom to choose your own hours, get paid what you are worth, and earn income from others without having employeesas a Multigent Independent Associate you can work exactly the way youve always wanted!

Should I incorporate?

Not necessarily, although you could certainly choose that path. If you choose not to incorporate you are a sole proprietor. This means your business income will be regarded as your personal income. There is no business tax to pay, but you will have to pay personal income tax on all your business income as if it were your salary. You would also pay self-employment tax, consisting of Social Security and Medicare, and are required to file "Profit or Loss from a Business" forms. On the other hand, as a corporation, your business assets will be regarded as separate from your personal assets, protecting you against certain liabilities.

If Im self-employed, what happens to my 401k Plan?

It gets better. The new tax codes have dramatically improved the situation for 401k contributions by the self-employed. Many investment firms now have special plans for small businesses and sole proprietorships.

Check with your accountant.

What should I do about health insurance?

If you are unable to enroll in your spouses health plan or take advantage of COBRA coverage, then you can apply for your own private insurance and deduct the cost as expenses. If both you and your spouse are on a health plan already, you can write off the total cost.

Will I need business insurance?

Professional Liability insurance (also known as Errors and Omissions) would protect your business against any claims for failure to perform. Its certainly worth considering, especially if you intend to operate as a sole proprietor. As a sole proprietor you can deduct the cost of the insurance from your earnings.

My current employment contract prohibits me from competing. Can I still participate?

Any restrictions will depend on the type of agreement you have signed with your employer. It also may be affected by where you live. A number of states will not enforce any restrictions on your ability to work. They may place distance restrictions within their non-compete agreements, (around 50 miles is common). An employment lawyer can advice you with regards to this subject.

Should I do business under my own name, or create a new business identity?

Its up to you. If you wanted to promote yourself as "Pauline Potters Personnel Services" for example, then you would be regarded as DBA or "Doing Business As". Some states also call this a "Fictitious Name" or an "Assumed Name". You may be required to file a permit for the name, which would prevent anyone else from using it and causing confusion, but the name has no effect on your legal status as a sole proprietor. You can file a name at your local or the offices of your Secretary of State at any time.

Note: In the day-to-day operations you refer to everyone that you are an Independent Associate of Multigent Corporation.

How do I cover my business expenses?

Working for your self, means paying for a variety of services. Many expenses are tax-deductible. You accountant can help you file claims for each expense. Private health insurance for example, will is 100% deductible and you may also be able to claim a home office deduction. As a sole proprietor, you can even claim on some entertainment expenses and receive a 100% deduction for your Internet connection.

Is there a limit to the amount of expenses I can write off?

You can write off up to $20,000 each year for Business Assets such as computers, office furniture, car etc. This does not include "intangible assets" however, such as office supplies and software. The deductions are limited to the point you show zero profit, but excess deductions can be carried into the following year. Again, you should consult your accountant about how much you will be able to claim.

When is a good time to start?

Now! This is the moment to become your own boss! You can begin by identifying target clients, speaking with your accountant and building your office. Basic office configuration should include: a Computer, preferably a Laptop, loaded with Windows Office 2000 or Windows XP, a printer, a fax machine and dedicated phone line.  With all this taken care of, you will be ready to start earning substantial commissions by working for yourself!

Note: Multigent has provided this information for general purposes only. We strongly encourage you to consult with an accountant or other qualified professionals for detailed information regarding your tax, accounting and legal status.

General Questions

What is Multigent?

Multigent, based in Newport Beach, California, is the brainchild of George Vasu and Tom Meyerhoeffer, two staffing industry veterans. Multigent is a virtual pay-for-performance staffing firm designed to help everyone in the workforce obtain a better quality of life. We provide a wide range of recruiting, career management, and staffing services. Multigent harnesses the power and reach of the Internet to optimize personal and business relationships. We provide personalized services incorporated with industry best practices, offer a business opportunity that enables each participant to earn the largest commissions in the industry and long-term recurring income in direct proportion to their performance and the performance of others.

Our service will allow jobseekers to confidentially register their career portfolios, submit their resumes and be represented by professional Multigent Independent Associates. The associate then provides the candidate with exclusive anonymous representation. Employers receive free job posting, competitive fees and instant access to the Multigent Independent Agents who represent the pre-screened qualified candidates to the employers posted opportunities.

Independent Associates, function as agents on behalf of both the candidates and the employers. When successful placements occur, the employer receives unsurpassed staffing services and the Multigent Independent Associates earn commissions in direct proportion to their contribution. In addition, whoever referred the candidate would also receive a referral fee. Commissions graduate to other levels of the referral network. Everyone earns commissions when the referrals within their relationship network generate revenues.

Revenues are generated from the placement fees paid by the employers for permanent and interim (consulting, contract and temporary) placements.

Multigent plans to become a leader in the $100 billion per year staffing industry by competing differently via strategic positioning to drive the "network effect" of collaboration, cross-promotion, and financial incentive. Our innovative Pay-for-Performance program (PerformPay) is a core component of the Multigent Commission Transaction Engine. It is designed to attract, retain, and financially reward every participating team member in the Multigent value chain.

Multigent users will be combining the Internet and other methods of communication as the tools to optimize their relationships. As Independent agents, they will provide excellent services, deliver best practices and just-in-time staffing services more efficiently and effectively. The network effect will create results not previously possible by reaching new segments of the population.
